Please join us for a discussion of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb.

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is a memoir that blends personal storytelling with behind-the-scenes insight into therapy. Lori Gottlieb, a psychotherapist, finds her own life unraveling after a painful breakup. Despite being a therapist herself, she reluctantly seeks help from another therapist—whom she refers to as “Wendell.”

As Gottlieb navigates her own vulnerability in therapy, she also shares the stories of several of her patients:

  • John, a self-absorbed Hollywood producer facing a terminal diagnosis
  • Julie, a young woman struggling with relationships and self-worth
  • Rita, a senior confronting regret and loneliness
  • Charlotte, a newlywed coping with unexpected dissatisfaction

Through these intertwined narratives, Gottlieb reveals the universal struggles beneath outward appearances. The book explores themes of grief, identity, love, self-deception, mortality, and the human need for connection. It demystifies therapy while showing that everyone—therapists included—needs help sometimes.

By alternating between therapist and patient perspectives, Gottlieb highlights how healing often comes from honesty, accountability, and the courage to confront uncomfortable truths.
