Please join us for a discussion of The Splendid and the Vile : A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance during the Blitz by Erik Larson.

The Splendid and the Vile is a narrative nonfiction account of Winston Churchill’s first year as prime minister during World War II, focusing on the period from May 1940 to May 1941, when Great Britain faced relentless bombing by Nazi Germany.

Rather than telling the story through military strategy alone, Erik Larson brings history to life by centering on Churchill’s personal world—his family, advisors, and daily routines—alongside the experiences of ordinary Londoners. Using diaries, letters, and firsthand accounts, Larson portrays how Churchill led the nation through the Blitz, balancing defiance, exhaustion, humor, and fear.

The book highlights Churchill’s leadership style, his powerful speeches, and his efforts to persuade the United States—particularly President Franklin D. Roosevelt—to support Britain before officially entering the war. At the same time, it shows the toll the war took on civilian life, as Londoners endured nightly air raids, destruction, and loss while maintaining resilience and morale.
